What is each friendship rap song about?
"Friends" – Whodini (1984)
The original friendship rap. It asks a simple question, "friends, how many of us have them?", and it still works as a toast forty years later.
"Just a Friend" – Biz Markie (1989)
The funniest song on the list. Biz falls for someone who keeps saying the guy on the phone is "just a friend". The off-key chorus is the whole point.
"Life Goes On" – 2Pac (1996)
A song for friends who are gone, written as a celebration rather than a lament.
"I'll Be Missing You" – Puff Daddy & Faith Evans feat. 112 (1997)
Built on The Police's "Every Breath You Take", it became one of the best-known tribute songs in any genre.
"Young, Wild & Free" – Snoop Dogg & Wiz Khalifa feat. Bruno Mars (2011)
The road-trip song. Play it when the whole group is in one car.
"No New Friends" – DJ Khaled feat. Drake, Rick Ross & Lil Wayne (2013)
A loyalty anthem: keep the people who were there before things got good.
"My Homies Still" – Lil Wayne feat. Big Sean (2013)
Same idea, lighter tone. Success changes a lot, but not the crew.
"See You Again" – Wiz Khalifa feat. Charlie Puth (2015)
Written for Furious 7 as a tribute to Paul Walker, it became the defining modern song about losing a friend.
"Real Friends" – Kanye West (2016)
The honest one: the friends and relatives you drift away from, and your own part in it.
